Delaware Park

Delaware Park

Delaware Park actually consists of an entire system of parks and places across Buffalo New York , and is titled the Delaware-Front Park System. The central point, and main attraction, is Delaware Park itself and is located in North Buffalo, bordering the Elmwood and Parkside neighborhoods.
The Buffalo Zoo is housed inside the park, along with many tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, a golf course, many trails for walking, running or biking, the Rose Garden, a theater which is home to Shakespeare in the Park, the Terrace at Delaware Park (which you can order take-out from), the parks Ivy Bridge and a replica of the Statue of David by Michaelangelo. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is adjacent to Delaware Park, which is also right next to Hoyt Lake, the Scajaquada Creek, and the Buffalo History Museum. The Scajaquada Expressway also runs through the park, and the Forest Lawn Cemetary (which is home to Millard Fillmore’s and Rick James’ gravesite) is directly located within the grounds.

Delaware Park Grounds:

The different constituents of the Delaware-Front Park System include Delaware Park itself, Gates Circle, Chapin Parkway, Soldier’s Place, Lincoln Parkway, Bidwell Parkway, Colonial Circle, Richmond Ave, Ferry Circle, Symphony Circle, Porter Ave, Columbus Park and finally Front Park. These are all part of the Buffalo Olmstead Parks Conservatory, for they were all designed by the infamous Frederick L. Olmstead Sr. and Calvert Faux (the people who designed the renowned Central Park in New York City) in 1870. This park has become famous, as it is not only one of the favorite parks to the locals of Buffalo, but also nationally recognized in 2014 when the American Planning Association named it one of the ‘Great Places in America’ and also in 2015 was listed by the Guardian as a part of the ‘top 10 parks in the world’. The estate was a location for leisure in environments that induced a model country landscape.
A gently sloping pasture sprinkled with vegetation and enclosed by trees molded the eastern section. Frederick L. Olmstead has been quoted saying “There is no more beautiful picture than that of a beautiful meadow, over which level-armed sheltering trees cast broad shadows,” which definitely encapsulates Delaware Park ‘to a T’. The park is so large it borders many different streets and neighborhoods, most notably Delaware, Elmwood and Parkside. You can get off at any one of those exits when getting there from the Scajaquada Expressway (198) from either the 33 or the 190.
